Step-by-Step Instructions for Decadent Brown Sugar Fudge
  1. Prepare an 8 × 8-inch square pan by lining with parchment paper and lightly greasing it.
  2. Combine brown sugar, butter, and evaporated milk in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, stirring for 3-5 minutes.
  3. Increase heat to bring the mixture to a boil and cook until it reaches the soft ball stage (234–240°F).
  4. Remove from heat and let cool undisturbed for about 10-15 minutes until it reaches approximately 110°F.
  5. Stir in vanilla extract and beat the mixture vigorously until thickened and opaque, about 5-7 minutes.
  6. If using, fold in chopped nuts into the thickened mixture carefully.
  7. Pour the fudge into the prepared pan, smoothing the top and letting it set for several hours or ideally overnight.
  8. Once set, lift the fudge from the pan and cut into squares using a warm knife.
